Privacy policy

Your privacy is important to IRISS (the Institute for Research and Innovation in Social Services) (we" or "us") and we are committed to ensuring that your privacy is protected. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect when you access our site and/or the Learning Exchange, why we collect it, where we disclose it and how you can instruct us if you prefer to limit the use of that information.

1. What information is collected?

From web pages: The servers listed on this page do not capture any personal data. However, in common with most web servers, the IP address and the corresponding domain name of the client are automatically logged. The address of the page where the client came from (the referrer) and the software used to access the page (the agent) are also logged.

From web forms: When you register as a new user of IRISS and /or the Learning Exchange you will be prompted to supply personal details using an online form.

From cookies: A cookie is a small piece of information that a web site puts on your hard disk or stores in your memory so that it can remember something about you at a later time. It is a mechanism that allows the server to store its own information about a user on the user's own computer. This is because each request for a web page is independent of all other requests, so the web page server has no memory of what pages it has shown you or anything about your previous visits. A cookie records your preferences when using a particular site, ensuring that you are not shown the same information and/or are only shown information you have stated that you are interested in. In order to use our web site you agree to let cookies be saved as they are an important part of the site navigation. If you object to the use of cookies - whether we use any or not - you can stop your browser from accepting them (see your browser's preferences options). However, if you remove cookies from your PC there may be some deterioration in the service you receive.

For more information about cookies see http://www.allaboutcookies.org/

3. Why is the information collected?

The information we collect is used to improve the content of our web pages and / or the Learning Exchange, and the quality of our service, and is not shared or sold to other organisations for commercial purposes. Routine logging of web server activity is necessary for monitoring the service we aim to provide and to improve our service. As part of the monitoring and improvement process, logs are also used for statistical analyses. However, we will only analyse an aggregation of data from routine logging web server activity, rather than any personal data relating to individuals. When we refer to "personal information" in this privacy policy, we mean information, which identifies you as an individual, or is capable of doing so. We expect all online forms which collect personal data to provide an explanation of what will happen to your data.

4. Where is the information disclosed?

Information collected through routine logging is not disclosed to any third parties. Normally information collected through online forms would not be disclosed to any third parties. However, if the information has to, or may, be disclosed the form should state what will happen to your data and/or seek permission as appropriate.

5. Are third party sites covered by this policy?

Third party Internet sites that you can link to from IRISS or the Learning Exchange are not covered by our privacy policy, so we urge you to be careful when you enter any personal information online. IRISS accepts no responsibility or liability for these sites.

6. Your consent

By submitting your information you consent to the use of that information as set out in this Privacy Policy. If we change our Privacy Policy we will post the changes on this page and alert you, and may place notices on other pages of the site, so that you may be aware of the information we collect and how we use it at all times. Continued use of the service will signify that you agree to any such changes.

7. Data Protection Act

The gathering, storage, use, releases and disposal of personal information is regulated by the Data Protection Act 1998.
