We are delighted to announce that Brenda Walker has been appointed as the new National Adult Protection Coordinator for Scotland. Brenda has a real commitment to making Adult Support and Protection (ASP) work better for both people and practitioners and has extensive experience in this area of social work.

Brenda joins us from North Ayrshire where she has worked as the Senior Officer for Adult Support and Protection, as well as chairing the Social Work Scotland ASP National Network. Prior to this she worked in a range of public and voluntary sector roles focussed on change, services and project management.

The National Adult Protection Coordinator post is funded by  Scottish Government and is hosted and supported by Iriss. The Coordinator works across Scotland to advise and guide partners on adult support and protection issues; coordinate and network ASP activity, and support improvement, learning and development in practice.  The National Adult Protection Coordinator will have a key role in implementing the Adult Support and Protection Improvement Plan. This builds on existing activity and contains work streams on assurance, governance, data & information, legislation, policy and guidance, practice improvement and prevention.

Dee Fraser, CEO of Iriss said:

"We are really pleased that Brenda, a highly respected and experienced ASP lead,  is joining us to lead on this critical area of social work practice. We look forward to working with her, and our Scottish Government colleagues, to make adult support and protection better for both people and practitioners."

Brenda Walker said:

“I am passionate about ensuring that adults at risk of harm, have access to the support and protection they deserve.  Having worked as the Senior Officer for Adult Support and Protection in North Ayrshire for ten years, I have seen how the Scottish legislation has supported the development of practice to ensure that supportive and protective measures can quickly and effectively be implemented.  My role with Social Work Scotland gave me the opportunity to learn about the national picture. I am so looking forward to my new role with Iriss and can't wait to build on the networks and partnerships which are the cornerstone of working within Adult Support and Protection.”

Brenda will start in her new role on 10 October 2022.
