Scottish Borders: self-evaluation in adult social work

In March 2024, Scottish Borders Adult Social Work began working with Iriss to improve how people access support. Staff from across the service came together to reflect on what’s working, what’s not, and how things could be better. The group focused on making the ‘front door’ to adult social work more inclusive and accessible, and a proposal has been developed for a dedicated Screening Team to provide a more consistent triage, ensuring people get the right help earlier and easing pressure on other teams. Rooted in continuous learning and feedback, the project aims to create a more responsive system for adults seeking support.

We will:

  • Bring in learning and examples from other areas that have redesigned their social work 'front doors'
  • Facilitate sessions with the group to support the redesign proposal and plans for implementation
  • Support the group to develop a culture of ongoing self-evaluation and continuous learning, for example weaving in continuous feedback from staff and adults who use services to shape improvements
