Hoarding is when somebody experiences great difficulty in getting rid of their possessions and, left to themselves, fill living areas with clutter. The risk can be to themselves and/or other people. Often, people who hoard experience significant distress, with hoarding also closely associated with trauma. The resources in this category explain what hoarding is, and present approaches that may work in addressing both the hoarding and issues underlying it.
This guidance describes what is meant by hoarding, the types of behaviour exhibited, and what the impact may be on the individual and those around them. It outlines three broad approaches to addressing hoarding behaviour (single agency response, formalised multi-agency complex case management, and investigations under the Adult Support & Protection (Scotland) Act 2007).
