United Nations convention on the rights of the child (UNCRC)

Description

The UNCRC is a treaty that establishes the fundamental rights of children, applying to all persons under 18 years of age.

The UNCRC (Incorporation) (Scotland) Act 2024 makes the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) part of Scots law. This means that public authorities in Scotland must act compatibly with the UNCRC when exercising their functions. The Act also empowers children and young people to enforce their rights in court and requires the Scottish Government to report on how it is meeting the UNCRC requirements.
