Children's homes

Telling the story of the thousands of children who migrated from the Orphan Homes of Scotland to to new lives in Canada, The Golden Bridge was inspired by an original exhibition created and displayed by Heatherbank Museum of Social Work in Glasgow Caledonian University. The Golden Bridge project was a collaboration between Iriss, Glasgow Caledonian University and Quarriers.

Introduction

This case study describes changes to the interior design of a purpose built children's home in Argyll and Bute, which has been used as a children's home since May 2001. The home contains six bedrooms to accommodate the children and young people.

Dr Ruth Emond and Dr Samantha Punch speak about a research project that they were involved in around food practices in residential children's homes. The significance of food to both children and the adults in the home is discussed. The project involved a research fellow living alongside the children and the staff for just under a year. It also involved individual interviews and focus groups with children and staff.

Zachari Duncalf, Research Fellow at CELCIS, speaks about a pilot project - Taking Place Seriously - that was undertaken to understand how young people feel about living in a children's home and what the young people liked or disliked about their surroundings. This recording sits within the parameters of child care as part of the collection.
