Yesterday marked the commencement of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) into Scots law recognising children’s rights. We want to celebrate this landmark with others. For some the work has already begun, for others it is about to really get going. We'd like to share some resources that focus on this historic development for the rights of children and young people.
People at the heart of positive change highlights the fab work being done in East Lothian by care experienced young people to make those rights real, influence change and ensure their voice is heard.
Insight 75 (Re-examining child neglect in the changing policy landscape by Gunn and Helm) highlights the responsibility the UNCRC places on State Parties to provide appropriate assistance to caregivers in performing their responsibilities to guarantee and promote rights. This requires a whole family, whole system cross-sector approach spanning prevention, universal services, early intervention and targeted intensive crisis support. It asserts how vital it is that professionals have the skills to hear what children are saying.
Insight 71 (Understanding the implications of children’s rights for Scottish youth justice by Miller and Gillon) provides practitioners with an overview of the current and developing youth justice policies, and a discussion of UNCRC incorporation into legislation in Scottish youth justice along with some of the complexities involved.
